Sculpted by Floods
Much of the landscape of what we now call the Pacific Northwest
was shaped by a geologic catastrophe of nearly biblical
proportions. At the end of the last ice age, glacial
floods swept through the region, leaving behind landforms and
artifacts so unusual that they now seem completely out of
place. This is the story of the Lake Missoula floods, and
how events that took place 15,000 years ago can still mystify
us, captivate our imaginations, and even shape the way we
live.
Runs approx. 60 min.

Bella Vista: An
Unseen View of WWII
Gourmet food. Weekend soccer tournaments. Language classes.
Musicals every Sunday. Summer camp? No…This was Bella Vista, a
World War II internment camp at Fort Missoula, Montana, home to
more than 1,000 Italian civilians. Seized eight months before
Pearl Harbor, these men effectively became the United States’
first – and no doubt luckiest – casualties of the war. It
was, recalls one former internee, "the best two–and–a–half
years of my life."

Farragut:
America’s Landlocked Navy
In 1941, the U.S. government selected a remote stretch of land
on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille to build a new naval base.
For nine months, construction crews poured their hearts,
patriotism and sweat into building Farragut Naval Training
Station. More than 22, 000 men worked 10-hour shifts for 13 out
of every 14 days. When the dust finally settled, there stood
barracks, mess halls, medical clinics, offices, chapels,
libraries and movie theaters – 776 buildings in all. At its
peak of operation, from September 1941 until June 1946, Farragut
Naval Training Station was the largest city in Idaho and was
temporary home to more than 300,000 Navy recruits. Today,
all that remains of Farragut are cracked cement foundations, the
brig and two giant water towers. But through archival photos and
the remembrances of those who were there, the base’s glory
days will come alive again in this special KSPS Public
Television documentary. 57 minutes

Reflections by
the River: Expo ’74
The year was 1974…the U.S. was in the thick of the Cold War;
an American president was caught in a web of scandal and
intrigue; and a small city in the Pacific Northwest threw a

later, KSPS Public Television looked back on the accomplishment—on
the vision, the people and the monumental effort that turned a
dream into a world-class reality. Now KSPS is pleased to bring
you this special 25th Anniversary home video edition of the
story of the little city that could…and did. 60 minutes
